Most of the time, I have terrible neck, shoulder and back pain due to the 7 types of Arthritis I suffer from. As I refuse to take pain medications, I’m always on the lookout to find new products to ease my pain naturally. That is why I was thrilled to be sent the Microwaveable Lavender-Scented Shoulder Heating Pad from Sunshine-Pillows.com to feature in my 2011 Holiday Gift Guide.
According to their website, this shoulder warmer, which retails at $55, is meant to give relief to shoulders and upper back pain relief, as the ergonomic pad is meant to stay in place, and the wide and extra long tail treats the shoulder as well as upper back muscles. The heat can increase blood flow, while the fleece covering keeps in the heat and provides insulation to your skin. The strong lavender scent is perfect for aromatherapy and stress reduction.
I completely agree with them on all their claims. I thought the shoulder pad smelled fabulous right when I opened the package, and once I put my shoulder warmer in the microwave for 2 minutes (They recommend starting off microwave it for 1.5 minutes, and then adding 10 second increments, so the Washington lavender and flaxseed won’t burn), and put it on myself, I was as blissful as a kitten sitting in the sun. True to their word, the heat from this shoulder warmer lasts at least a half hour–in fact, I felt heat from it while wearing it for 2 hours. The lavender scent really soothed my already frazzled nerves, although I must tell you my husband hates the scent, which is funny to me, since I am the one who is more scent sensitive. I even had my mother-in-law try it on when she came over for Thanksgiving, and she didn’t want to take it off of her shoulders, either.
I am thrilled that I don’t have to use my electric heating pad, as I kept burning my back and side on it. It is so nice to have a portable heating pad that allows me the freedom to travel in a car with it, or to sit away from an outlet. This heating pad can also be put into the freezer and turned into a freezer pack for freezing sore muscles. You just freeze it for 60 minutes and you are good to go. Since I’m extremely cold sensitive due to my Neuropathy, I didn’t try this, but I’m sure it would feel good to those people who need to ice their joints and muscles.
What I loved about this shoulder warmer was that it’s filled with flaxseed. Not only did it feel really soft, but it retained heat beautifully. Plus it has an anti-pill fleece cover that is removable so I can toss it into the wash whenever it gets dirty. If you’ve ever used a regular heating pad, you know how ugly those covers get. And, the best part is that this heating pad is divided into equal chambers so the flaxseed (heat) doesn’t pool into one area of the heating pad, it’s everywhere. I give it an enthusiastic thumbs up!
