Scandle® Travel Candle Review & Black Friday Giveaway - 2011 Holiday Gift Guide

Recently, ABodyCandle.com sent me one of their Scandle® Essentials Travel Candles in the Detoxifying Blend scent to review in my 2011 Holiday Gift Guide. Since it doubles as a massage oil candle–something I’ve never used–I decided to try it out several times before writing my review.

I’m a huge candle fanatic in general, having been a former candle salesperson and all. In my glory days, I’d burn around 100 or so candles if I was hosting a party or event at my house. So, the idea of burning a soy wax candle that can also be used as massage oil for one or two people was quite a mystery to me.

The first thing I noticed about my candle was that the outer tin was a little banged up and scuffed. If I had paid $13.95 for it (the aromatherapy scents are a $1 extra), I would have been a little miffed by this, since I like my candle tins bright and shiny. However, since it was a review item, I didn’t mind the scuff and ding marks all that much. Since I didn’t notice the directions listed on the bottom of the candle, I was glad that I remembered to burn it for at least 30 minutes the first time I used it. The scent was ok when I was burning it, but it didn’t smell like how I expected it to, based on how it was described. The Detoxifying Blend is a Sophisticated Blend of Basil, Cedarwood,Cypress, Grapefruit, Juniper, Lemon,Orange, Rosemary, and Oregano. I love orange, lemon and grapefruit scents, but I couldn’t smell any of those scents, as the cedarwood, rosemary and oregano overpowered them.

When I used the candle as a massage oil, I asked my husband (rather jokingly) if it smelled sexy to him. He said, “No, it smells like pine tree.” I think the candle, once rubbed into my hands, smelled like strong candle wax with a hint of a medicinal soap scent. I picked this scent because I believe in and enjoy aromatherapy, so I wasn’t going for a “sexy” scent, of course. I am using it on my hands, rather than as a couple thing since I have terrible arthritis and I thought it could help. However, I don’t think I’ll be rubbing it into my skin again, since the scent reminds me of a hospital, and I didn’t like the feeling of the soy wax on my hands. I’m thinking that their other scents would have been much more appealing as both a candle and a massage oil, so that’s my mistake, as I picked out my scent.

What I liked best about this product was the price, as the candle is extremely affordable. I also like the fact that the wax doesn’t burn your skin at all once it is poured on to it, and that the candle can be portable and taken with you on vacation or an overnight event. It even comes with a silicone band that can be removed after use and used as an eco-wrist band reminder to “Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.” Other bonus points are that the candle does not emit toxins while burning, it emits an incredibly small amount of soot, it is biodegradable, and since it burns cooler, it burns slower, meaning you get more candle burning for your buck.
