Caffeine Makes Me Bleed (And How It Can Poison You, Too!) by Susan Lynn – Giveaway and Review

When I received an email from Susan Lynn, asking me if I wanted to read, review, and host a giveaway for her novel, Caffeine Makes Me Bleed (And How It Can Poison You, Too!), I knew I had to say yes, even though I had way too many other books in my to read basket. I’m always fascinated by memoirs, especially ones that are health-realted.

Caffeine Makes Me Bleed

You see, I’ve always been fascinated by the effects caffeine has on my body, as I have three different medical conditions that basically demand that I don’t drink or consume any caffeine. I can physically and emotionally feel the effect of caffeine on my body and mind, and yet it is so hard for me to not consume it. As a life-long chocolate junkie and a pop (soda) addict since 2003, I go off and on caffeine binges like the worst kind of drug addict. When Susan wrote me last month, I was clean, and since going to New York a few weeks ago for my book convention, I have been back on caffeine every day and have allowed myself to become totally addicted to it again. After reading her book a few weeks ago while clean, this makes me totally more ashamed and mad at myself–but I take each day of caffeine addiction as it comes–I always manage to quit, and I struggle to stay off the stuff for good. Caffeine is the devil, since it affects my Dysautonomia (a debilitating condition that completely puts my Autonomic Nervous System into a tizzy), my GERD, and my ADHD, as it is one powerful stimulant that can kill. Yes, that is right, in the right amount, caffeine can kill animals and humans. When you throw in my weakened immune system from several other auto-immune conditions I have, then you can begin to understand how deadly my daily can of Coke can be to me.

According to Susan Lynn:

You deserve the truth about the dangers of caffeine consumption and about the long-term effects caffeine can have on your health from someone who has lived it firsthand.

This book was born out of my struggle to discover why after thirty-nine years of enjoying colas, tea, and chocolate—problem-free—I began suffering severe pain and bleeding internally after consuming any product containing even the least fleck of caffeine.  I worried it could happen to my family, friends, or you.

You should read Caffeine Makes Me Bleed if you are ready to accept the bad and ugly about the effects of caffeine and how it changed my life forever.

Read this book and discover:

  • The secret destructive power of caffeine
  • How stress and caffeine hurt you
  • How caffeine can affect your digestive tract and immune system
  • How our culture brainwashed us to consume a drug daily
  • Five reasons to avoid colas, coffee, tea, chocolate, and energy drinks

File:Main symptoms of Caffeine overdose.png

I was amazed to learn that 200,000,000 people in the U.S. drink coffee each day, and that somewhere between 80-90% of 310,000,000 Americans consume caffeine each day in some form, rather it be from one of the 3,000 prescription medications that have caffeine inside them, or by consuming soda pop, chocolate, tea, coffee, or energy drinks. If you are around my age, you grew up drinking at least one pop a day, and eating a candy bar, cookie, brownie or piece of cake in addition to that pop. I can’t imagine how many people are out there that drink several coffees or several pops a day, but I’ve seen plenty of them in the 20 years I spent waitress, bartending and cocktail serving. Our society is totally addicted to caffeine, and it is about time someone try to convince others how bad this stuff is for all of us. If you are lucky Susan, you are extremely sensitive to all forms of caffeine, and you can actually bleed from it.

If you enjoy memoirs that deal with health issues and traumatic events, Susan Lynn is your girl, and I suggest you read her book, or at least enter the giveaway. I was horrified to open her book and find out what happened to her in the emergency room. Horrified! Susan Lynn also spent her life working in high-stress jobs, as many of us have, and she struggled to deal with the long-term effects of caffeine, and searched to find the right doctor to treat her. As someone who is addicted to watching Mystery Diagnosis every week, I enjoyed reading her book because while I’m sad and bothered that so many doctors couldn’t help her, her struggle makes me feel better about my own medical struggles to find out what was wrong with me. I can’t tell you how hard it was to under all sorts of testing before Mayo Clinic diagnosed me with a genetic diseases that involves a loss of collagen in my body, causing me to have over 40 other medical conditions. I felt Susan’s pain on every page, and I was fascinated to learn what caffeine does to her. I was also horrified to learn that a doctor told her, “There is nothing wrong with you,” while giving her “that famous you-are-a-mental-patient snicker.” While I enjoyed her book, I do wish she had shared more of her research in the book, but then again, you can visit her website to find out some of that information. What is important to know is that Susan Lynn is warning you that you need to cut your caffeine consumption, and you need to do it now, in order to save your life, or at least your good health.

I am fascinated by what information this book might contain. I need my daily caffeine fix……….just as I’m sure many others do. I work in the medical profession, so this could be enlightening information I could use!

  23. This post made me spit my coffee, and not in a good/fun way. How frightening! Look at all of those side effects.
I have been consuming caffeine all of my life, and am raising my daughters on caffeine as well. This is making me reconsider handing my 6 and 8 year olds a pop or a bit of coffee to “help” them wake-up. Did I just associate help with caffeine. Help me!

    • Tipsy – OMG, I was so freaked out when I read her book. I have finally stopped my 12-year-old from drinking pop in our home, after a long, long battle. I think any stimulant is dangerous, and as Susan tells us, in her case, any caffeine actually makes her bleed and causes her to be extremely sick. Scary, scary stuff–stay off the pop and coffee, girl!

  24. I learned that caffeine is in many of our drugs and drinks, and that it does a lot more harm than good.
