22 Britannia Road is absolutely riveting. I quite literally could not put it down–I read the entire book in one sitting last week. Now, I love a good historical fiction novel, especially one that takes place after the Holocaust. That being said, I must tell you this book is special. As in future movie special. Do you know how some books are great because they are beautifully written, or because they are exciting, or even because they have unique characters and/or painful subject matter? Well, I have to tell you this book falls into all of those categories, which I don’t see all that often, especially from a first-time novelist.
22 Britannia Road is a deeply moving novel about wartime secrets, secrets that perhaps should have never been told, let alone allowed to occur in the first place. The book begins in 1946, at the end of World War II, and we are introduced to Silvana Nowak and her eight-year-old Aurek, as they board the ship that will take them from war-torn Poland to England. When Silvan is asked for her occupation, “housekeeper or housewife?,” Silvana responds quietly, “survivor.” Silvana and Aurek had a very different type of survival during WWII, as they spent much of the war hiding in the forests of Poland, living wild and living apart from Silvana’s husband Janusz.
Waiting in England is Silvana’s husband Janusz, who has not seen his wife and son for six years. He had no idea that they even survived the war, and he has begun the process of decorating his newly acquired home, working hard in the backyard in order to plant his family a proper English garden, as a welcome to their new lives. Silvana, Janusz and Aurek have all changed during the years they lived apart and have many things to overcome, such as the fact that the boy coos like a bird, refers to his father as “the enemy,” (since he forces the boy to sleep separately from his mother for the first time in his life) and still feeds of off his mother’s breasts.
Everyone has their secrets–Janusz still has the letters from a love in France whom he cannot forget, and Silvana’s secrets are so horrible they aren’t even mentioned until the end of the book. When that happens, you will shudder in horror, because no person should have had to went through what she went through during that horrible war. Even Aurek has his secrets, but everyone is struggling to keep them hidden, and struggling to reveal them to one other.
22 Britannia Road is one of those books YOU HAVE TO READ. If you enjoy stories about WWII, the Holocaust, maternal love, and overcoming hardship, then this book if for you. I promise you are going to love it! Visit Amazon.com to pre-order your own copy of 22 Britannia Road now.

I want to read and win this book because it takes place post-WWII which was an era of people trying to put their lives back together. The themes of struggling and drive and strength bring hope that people can suffer and flourish in the end. Plus, I love to read a good novel, especially a historical one.

Cheers! from Sue L.

Fact from Amanda’s website: aside from this being a very beautiful website, I love that she makes special note on her website for her Travel Satchel. That is a wonderful travel tool – one, because it holds everything she needs and wants that is close and dear to her heart, but that it helps to find her in a crowded airport, etc. for her family. That’s really awesome! And SO important – I love that she thought about it, wrote about it and considers her family and any anxiety that may happen when travelling in places that are crowded.
I definitely have this book down as To Read on Goodreads. I absolutely sucked in and love reading these stories, as horribly heartbreaking as they are, about the Holocaust, survivors, WWII, special bonds. I am so sucked in to these stories and it is so very important to read these stories. It is unbelievable, and should never be forgotten. A very important piece of history.
I am currently reading An Invisible Bridge, which so far is incredible.
I’ve read recently Far to Go, which I loved the “different” sort of perspective she wrote from. Another one that is essential to read is Clara’s War. Clara’s War is AMAZING and so hard to fathom, but you cannot put this book down.
I put that I entered the contest on Facebook. My Facebook name is PennyKollar.

I spent a lot of time on Amanda Hodgkinson’s website; frankly I thought it was fascinating! I loved reading about her childhood and the wonderful way she has of describing her memories and how she was raised (I would have loved to have hippy parents!). I also appreciate how much she loves films and that she actually takes the time to speak with the girl at the box office and get her opinion and ask how she is (that is so “small town” and awesome!). I continue to think about the big questions the Holocaust and WWII pose. Having read non-fiction accounts, philisophical texts, and survivor’s stories, I am eager to add a book of historical fiction to my process of understanding. The author’s bright yellow carryall is a standout! I am a subscriber via email, follower on fb, fan and friend on Goodreads.

I was fascinated that it took place in Poland, where my husband was born, and it occurred with World War Two where my mother and her two sisters and two brothers were Holocaust survivors.

I would love to win this book because I lived in Isreal in the early 90′s and met a few survivors, they were truly the most enduring, strong people (at this point all well into their senior years) you could ever know. I also spent time at a place called Yad Vashim (sorry if spelled wrong it was a long time ago) which was a hollocust museum that just shattered my heart, amazing what one group of people can do to another! I would love to read this book to remember all the people I met, there children and grandchildren (that became my dear friends).
I learned that the author grew up in a British fishing village and now lives in France with her family!

This is her debut novel!
here’s what she says about her youth:
We didn’t have any money but we ate off pretty pottery plates and our home-made clothes were colourful.

I found it interesting that the book was chosen as amazon.com’s number one spotlight selection, editor’s choice in April best books of the month.
Amanda thinks she first decided to become a writer when her parents opened a second-hand bookstore, and she’d rummage through the cartons of books reading everything.

I would love to win this book, because I’ve always had an interest in the time period, especially since my grandmother has many stories to tell from then. Plus, the more I read about the book, the more I can’t wait to get my hands on it.
Thank you!
