My first monthly Ghetto Girl Book Club will be held on Tuesday November 10, 2009.

We will be meeting at my house from 7-9 pm, and for those of you in the blog world, or who just live way too far from me can join us online that night as well.

The winner of our book club poll was Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen and I’m so excited about this choice. I saw the movie back in 1999 and watched Angelina Jolie steal the film away from Winona Ryder, which is exactly why she deserved that Oscar. I’ve always wanted to read the book, and now I finally get to. We will compare and contrast the book and the film. You have four weeks to watch or read Girl, Interrupted, so get cracking on it. This book will be available at your public library, or can be ordered for under $9 at amazon.com.

Here is a quote from the film to give you a taste of what to expect:
Have you ever confused a dream with life? Or stolen something when you have the cash? Have you ever been blue? Or thought your train moving while sitting still? Maybe I was just crazy. Maybe it was the 60’s. Or maybe I was just a girl… interrupted.

And, a little about the book:
The book is a memoir written by Susanna Kaysen, and it is about her two year stay in a mental hospital as a teenager back in the 1960’s. Susanna was just 18 years old when she entered McLean Hospital, the very same hospital that once housed some of my favorite writers and musicians, Sylvia Plath, James Taylor, and Ray Charles.

Oh how I wish I could come amd join! I go to school Tuesday nights so I can’t even join in on the blog discussions
I am done with school in early December so maybe I can do the next book with you guys? I’m going to read Girl Interrupted anyway, I also loved the movie and the book has always been on “to read list”. I think this book club is a great idea and I hope it is successful!

Shannon – No worries! I was already planning on posting earlier in the day on Tuesdays for the online group, so you guys can join in, and maybe we can glance at the blog during discussion. (Not sure, invited some friends who don’t know I blog, so we may not blog live yet, gotta work that all out.) Certainly you can comment before or afer work or even the following day, just like any of my posts. I really hope to hear from you, and I’m thrilled you are going to read it.

I’m going to the library to get this book today. I have always wanted to participate in a book club. Our local libraries even have a “Book Club in a Bag” that you can check out that has 10 copies of a book, discussion questions and tips to start a successful book club. But none of my friends really seemed interested when I brought this up a couple monts ago – sad. So, this is the next best thing since I can’t get my friends to do one with me.
Thanks!

Adrienne – Funny you mention books in a bag … I wanted to do that, but I’m so worried someone will forget to bring back the book and I’ll be stuck with the late fees, lol! I’m going to the library (Hopefully) today to talk to my librarian, as I’m semi worried about doing this right. Going to find some good stuff, and maybe I’ll have time to email the author, see if she can help us with the discussion. Most of my emails go unanswered … I think my blog name scares most people.

I will def join your book club but Im in the middle of “EDIE” Ive seen Girl Interrupted and I think the book Im reading is depressing enough. Maybe this can be your next selection as there are quotes from Truman Capote and Joel Schumaker. I also reccommend “Other Voices Other Rooms” by Truman Capote… facinating!! Luv u. Jeannies in jail!

Lake – I saw the movie based on Edie and I thought it was pretty good. Always a possibility for a book club choice. I need to read Capote, I’m such a slacker. And I’m sorry about Jeannie.

Have you read The Glass Castle from Jeannette Walls? Talk about coming from the ghetto. That was my book club book for last month. What a crazy life….

Mo – I have read it, and I agree, what a dysfunctional life.
