Travel Quiz – How Many States Have You Been To?

Here is a fun travel quiz to see how many states you have visited.  The average American has been to 8 states, and I’ve been to 37 states, plus Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico,  so how do you match up?  Keep in mind, landing in airports doesn’t count.  My rule is that you either had to vacation in the state,  or drive through and pee in the states you list.  So, if you drove through Texas and never stopped for a potty break, it doesn’t count here.

I love to travel, and have been lucky enough to even go to Europe twice.  Here I am in Paris, which I’ve been to twice.

Surprisingly, my travel adventures really began as an adult.  Before the age of twenty I had only been to Wisconsin, Illinois and Canada.  It didn’t hurt being a flight attendant, either.

To play along, you can either write a blog post with your quiz score and link here, comparing our scores, or you can play by commenting with your answers.

  1. does it count if I just drove through a state?

  2. 49 plus Puerto Rico, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands of St. Thomas and St. Croix.

    Haven’t been to Hawaii, yet.

    • Mike, you are amazing! You win! We’ve got to get you to Hawaii!

  3. I think i’ve been to 10 states…born and raised in OK. been to TX, AR, LA, IL, MO, HI, GA, lived in TN from 05-jan. 09 and now live in KY, but my husband is from Ky so i’ve been here many times. He is a recruiter for the U.S. Army so i’m sure this won’t be the last state we live in. Never been to a foreign country either:( I do want to visit Italy so bad one day though.

    • Mandy, you’ve got to get to Italy someday. Sign up for travel fare alerts. Going in the winter, which is still mild, is much more affordable. you just go. I hope you get there! And, I love a man in uniform, good for you!

  4. 31! Woohoo. I went by my long-held rule that I have to spend a night it a state in order for it to count, although I like your peeing rule. And you do realize this is going to bring even more “peeing” searches to your blog! Haha.

  5. 25 for Mr. W (with the two bonuses)… 27ish for me (with the two bonuses) and if I can count Utah for me putting my butt in. (I sat on the four-corners once!) The -ish is because I’ve driven cross country 3 times, 3 different ways, and up and down both the east and west coasts at least 10 times and have no idea where I stopped to pee…but I do pee a lot…ask Mr. W! :)

    • Writebrite – Very impressive for you both. I know you and B must have me beat for world travel though, how many each would you say?

      • Personally, 17 countries, including the US and Mexico (by the same rules of having to at least pee in the country). I’ve flown around the world, literally, 3 times, and have spent at least a month in 3 other countries besides the US…England (total of 7 years of my childhood), Malaysia (3 separate month long visits to family), and Qatar (6 month deployment). I haven’t been to all the cool countries you have though…what’s your count?

        • I think my count is 14 or 15 … but I forget and I’m rushing to catch up on all these comments on here. You lived in England, and I always think that is the coolest thing about you!!!!

  6. Does taking off in airports count? :p

    • B – Hello stranger. You have been to plenty of places, so no, no airports for you!

  7. 25 states plus D.C., Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea. I went to Yellowstone which I loved. Amazing.

I have always wanted to travel more internationally as well as go to Alaska and Hawaii. You are so lucky Girl to have gone to Paris. You totally suck and are lucky.

Romania is the major place I want to go. I love castles and would love to see that country side. And maybe a vampire in Transylvania.

If only I had money. *daydreaming now*

    • Saya – Have you read The Historian? You will live it, go to amazon now and buy it. Saya, sometimes you gotta break out the plastic and go. I’d kill to go to Australia and New Zealand myself, so you are a lucky one yourself.

  8. I am at 33 legitimate state visits–I almost forgot Delaware, but I was on the DelMarVa Peninsula with the crazy wild ponies, so I think that counts. Does the UP count as it’s own state or merely as an addition to northern WI?

Foreign visits include Canada (seems less alien than the UP, but I will count it), UK, Spain, Netherlands. I clearly need to get out of the country more.

Enjoying catching up on your site, which I stumbled upon today. Thanks for sharing your musings.

    • Michelle – 33 states is pretty impressive! And I’m glad you stumbled here, hope to you your back again soon.

    • Maybe this is a dumb question, but I gotta know. What or where is the UP?

      • Ha ha ha … The Upper Penninsula of Michigan. Michigan is shaped a mitten and connected on top by a bridge which also resembles another hand. All of us here in MI us our hands to show where we live. If you live in the UP you are called a ‘youper, and in the mitten part (Me) I’m refered to as a troll. LOL. Our state is so cool, eh?

        • LOL! You’re a troll because you live under the bridge. That’s hilarious. And I love that you guys use your hand to show where you live. I can just picture people discussing geography while pointing at their palms or fingers. How convent! I wonder if people in Louisiana point at their foot, or people in Florida point at their…you know…

          Thanks for satisfying my curiosity!

          • Oh, heck yeah that’s funny. I died when I heard that in college.

  9. I’ve been to 20 states or 21 if you count DC. Including London UK, Cork, Dublin, Limerick, Kensale(sp) Ire, Paris Fr, Zurich Switz, Munich, Berlin, Heidelburg, Frankfurt, Bremen, Bremenhaven, Hamburg, Nurnburg Germany, Milan Italy Prague, Amsterdam, Calgary, Baniff Canada & Mexico

    • I’d love to go to Prague, Hamberg, and anywhere in Ireland. You are so lucky to have made it to all those places!
