My mother-in-law always asks this question anytime any one of us talks to her. It is expected that you better tell her something you’ve learned since the last time you’ve spoken with her. I love it, and thought it would be a decent blog post idea. So, I’m going to tell you all some stuff I know, and I expect maybe a few of you will tell me what YOU know. Because learning something new is always important. I’ve been busy the past few days, learning a ton of stuff. For instance, I learned that I love doing fraction homework with my ten year old, because he knows it well and its fun to see him finally master some math.

I learned that AMC Theatres are really earning my respect by coming up with a program called AMC Sensory Friendly Films, which invites Autistic viewers and their families a chance to go to the movies without facing judgment. For those of you who do not know this, I have a stepchild with Aspergers, which can be very challenging at times for all of us. I can’t imagine what parents with children who have more severe forms of Autism go through, especially at the movies. When our child was younger, he’d do things like clap his hands and yell yeah to the screen. (I personally enjoyed this, because if you took one look at this adorable kid, who loves movies so much, just ENJOYING himself. you would just die from his cuteness!) I’ve seen him wave to the screen. The boy loves movies, and by age six he asked for a calender so he could know exactly when all the release dates for his films were going to be. So, needless to say, he’s gotten over the hump of movie going. But a lot of kids who have Autism haven’t, or just can’t, and it makes me sad, because ever since I saw Bambi, I have been hooked on going to the movies. This program recognizes that Autistic children have sensory issues, so they use dim lighting during the film so kids won’t get frightened, and they turn down the sound so that it isn’t so loud. They allow talking and movement during the film so that these kids and their parents won’t get the evil eye and all of this started because a woman simply asked the chain to come up with an idea that would allow her child to go to the movies, because they had been kicked out of the film because he child had been roaming the auditorium of another theatre. I LOVE that this parent had an idea, and that a huge chain acted upon it. It is simply fantastic. Find out more here:

I also learned that I am not the only person in the planet who loves learning. Well, of course I know that already, but I just read this fantastic book about a man (Who, coincidently, I used to read his work at EW Magazine) who decided he wanted to read the entire set of Encyclopedia Britannica. The book is written by A.J. Jacobs and its called The Know-It-All: One Man’s Humble Quest to Become the Smartest Person in the World. I loved this book and it kept me going through countless hours sitting at in waiting rooms and Mayo Clinic. Mr. Jacobs has a great sense of humor and has a mind full of pop culture knowledge meshed with years of actual education. I just finished it about two hours ago, and I’m sad it’s over. Not only did I get to learn tons of cool facts, like the White House was originally going to be called The Presidential Palace, or that Casanova died as a librarian? I also learned all about his personal life along the way, such as when he appeared on Who Wants to be a Millionaire. Anyone interested in learning or who just loves to read books about funny smart Jewish New Yorker needs to go buy this book ASAP. Just go to his website and you can see how brilliant he is:
http://www.ajjacobs.com/content/home.asp

I’ve also learned more bad news about me. I thought I was done hearing bad news, but oh no, the gods are not letting me rest. I have to get a hysterectomy next month because I have a conditions called Adenomyosis, and the only cure is this surgery. I’ve had four other surgeries to avoid this. I also have been told by other woman that I may gain 20-30 pounds after the surgery, and I’ll be able to feel all of my organs slip down into the empty spot in my body. I am horrified by both of these possibilities.

But, even worse than learning that I have to have surgery is when I learned this week that someone at my work is going to get laid off. Not a part timer, like last time, but a full timer. I’ve been at my job a long long time, but have low senoirity. I’m about 95% convinced its going to be me, and all we know is that its going to happen sometime this summer. I bet it’ll happen just before I go out on medical leave, and of course I am not happy about it. But I live in Michigan and people are losing jobs left and right. I hear a rumor that our unemployment rate is near thirteen percent. It’s all the auto industries fault, and I don’t like this one bit. I’m a casualty, because I don’t even work in that industry at all. I’m not alone, but I am still mad as hell about it, because I work my ass off, and I assure you, I’m probably the hardest worker at my job. Seriously, I’m not even exaggerating about this. I think that I’m tired of hearing about all these programs for laid off auto workers, because it’s now affecting the other industries, like mine, i.e. civil service. I’m so pissed off that I have to worry about this on top of my health. Of course I am wondering if our state can’t afford to pay and keep its workers so that our government can function, then what else is going to happen here in Michigan? Frak.

So, why not distract my mind and tell me what you know.

Jeez, I’m so sorry to hear about the hysterectomy and the job situation. I pray that things will work out in your best interest all around. That’s a lot for you to handle.
I have that book! But I have a terrible memory and can’t remember much of it because I read it a couple years ago. I only know anything temporarily because then I forget.
I have learned that I love unflavored almond milk in my Grape Nuts. I meant to get more today when I went shopping and of course I forgot it. I have to use regular skim milk until I go back. I wish I could learn how to stop forgetting things.

Birdpress – Oh, thanks. I am getting sick of having to talk about being sick. Unflavored almond milk? Hmmm …. sounds interesting. I haven’t ate grape nuts in years.

Your MIL, the quinticential gossip queen…I love that YOU MUST FIT RIGHT IN WITH HER! LOL. Well about WHAT I KNOW. I know A LOT. An awful lot. IN fact I’ve got a running list here of SIX things I’d like and need and been wanting to share with you. ONE PROBLEM. I sure can’t share them here! BWAHAHAHA…But alas, when you get your sick fanny up and can meet me (On a day I do not work,) then we will go over them. And I will indeed “Tell you what I know.” There may be 7 or 8 by then!

Almond milk is easier to digest than cow’s milk and has different nutrition benefits. I specified unflavored because there is also vanilla and sweetened milk, which sounds gross.
Anyway, I forgot to mention that the movie theater thing is a great idea! I have a friend with an autistic son. I wonder if they have this where she is. I think it would be kind of fun to be in a theater with a bunch of kids having fun and running around. Well, once anyway.

The program runs in a bunch of states, they do a movie at a time, like once per month, hopefully your friend can go.

The hysterectomy? I had one six years ago, a complete one, Best thing I EVER did! Do not let the naysayers scare you. It doesn’t have to be a tragedy.
Sorry about the job situation in Michigan. That has to be frightening to have going on at the same time as the health issues.
Have you tried the gluten/caisin free diet for the Asberger mood swings?
See you’re doing the tv review thing too..I came in here looking for Weasel from Daisy of Love. I adore him! LOL

Teevho – I keep reading about increased cancer risks, heart issues, etc. And I am scared about other stuff I don’t want to mention here. I was very stressed last week, better today. Can’t do anything but ove forward. I tried doing some gluten free. Problem is that we don’t have our kids all the time, just half the week. So, everyone would need to go gluten free. I love talking trash about tv. I’ll have to come see you soon!

What do I know? I learned recently that the wild flowers in our yard are called Trillium, they look a little bit like wild orchids. I have really good hand eye coordination I like to amaze my husband when ever he throws keys or anything. I can usually catch it with either hand. I guess that isn’t something I know it’s something I do. hmmm Wow I’m racking my brain what do I know. I also know a lot of obscure medical stuff which I don’t have much use for. LOL I’ll have to learn more stuff!

Starlaschat – I just bought some Trillium, how fun is that! Oh, honey, I am queen of medical stuff myself. Anytime you want to talk shop, you let me know.

Hey girl, I know a lot of stuff, most of it is science. I will share something about crickets. Ok, well as the temperature outside gets warmer you will hear the cricket chirp more often. Count the chirps for 15 seconds and add 40 and that will be the temperature outside. Did you know the adult mayfly does not eat and the lifespan is only 30 minutes to one day? Additionally, I can tell you a lot about our educational system such as, “A Nation at Risk” and “No Child Left Behind”, Did you know that NCLB involves the use of subgroups that unfairly disadvantages our low performing students? Especially the students the law promises to protect under reform efforts.
By: Trish Fish on May 17, 2009

Trish Fish – Ok, you are freaking me out girl. When did you get so smart on me? I know that I don’t like the NCLB law from what I’ve read on it earlier, but reading that you don’t like it and you are a teacher tells me my instincts were right. I think the program had good intentions, but it has now failed. When kids focus on certain things in the classroom and sacrifice other things like learning how to write correctly just for a good test result can never a good thing. Ugh. I am sorry for every kid in the world who is getting a crappy education. I was one of them. School has the potential to be anything we want it to be, and for some kids, it is a real nightmare. Makes me sad …

I really connected with this post for the following reasons.
1) I have a young friend who has two autistic daughters who will love to learn about AMC Sensory Friendly Films as those girls love movies.
2) Regarding the The Know-It-All book, my daughter is a professional actress and has been working on a play about that book, and
3) Seems to me its about time for you to go out on permanent disability. I would think you would definitely qualify. It pays better than unemployment and would give you income while you pursue your writing.

Debbie – I am glad you commented here, thank you!
I am so happy that at least one person will benefit from this post. I hope those girls enjoy going to the movies! And, wow, will this play be in NYC? How exciting for her! As for the disability, I’m afraid, I’m too young, what will I do for the rest of my life, how will we survive? I’m not sure I’m even good enough to make it as a writer. I don’t even have a degree in English or Journalism…

Hi Girl from the Ghetto: I love reading your blog. I am sorry to hear that your health problems continue. Just wanted to let you know that I had a hysterectomy when I was 31 (20 yrs ago) and never regretted it. I got rid of my abdominal pain and no more periods! The recovery time wasn’t that bad either. And think of all the money you’ll save from buying all those feminine hygiene products! Take care.

Wow. I’m sorry you have to have surgery but at least it looks like some of your other readers have had good results so let’s hope it is like that for you too. No reason to think it won’t be. That book sounds like a good read so I will have to add it to my list of books I’d like to read. Hmmm – I know a lot of stuff but most of it is useless info. LOL.

Teeni – You know how to make cute magic pills! Yes, both my medical doctor and my Physical Medicine doctor agreed that I should get the surgery. Now just as long as my heat and lungs will behave, I hope it will be very successful. I am just hoping the other stuff related to this surgery will work out, you know, the unmentionable stuff, lol! Thanks for thinking of me.

Hey…I just had a hysterectomy three weeks ago and I’ve actually LOST weight! Don’t worry about it. I put off having the surgery for several years because of all the bad things I heard and it has been very nice—I was bleeding pretty bad and I love not having to worry about it now, but I still do, out of habit. Ask for a laperscopic surgery, the healing is much faster. I also have an Asperger son and it is wonderful. They are beautiful, intelligent, good as gold people…more difficulty as they get older with communications but if worked with, it gets simpler. Blessings on you with your surgery and all. I don’t think the economy is ALL the auto industry’s fault, I think lots of other businesses and politicians have affected it. Lots of things have contributed to it–the inflation and home loans. Even my husband and I feel like we contributed because we bought a house in 01 and sold it in 04 for $30,000 more than we bought it for. We had made only about $2000 worth of improvements on it. So we contributed to the inflation of the country because that makes the other homes in your area sell for more and it just goes up and up. It finally collapsed. So we’ve all probably had something to do with it, unless you’re a person who never bought anything you didn’t truly need, and never bought anything on credit. All the best to you. I’m so glad to know about AMC theatres!

Lella – Thanks for sharing that about your health. I am glad to hear weight loss is a possibility. I think one month away from an office full of treats will have me lose a bit as well. And I agree, the auto industry is not all to blame. Thank you for commenting and sorry it took me awile to respond. I try to comment on every post someone leaves and I’m a few days behind.

Should you ever decide to apply for Social Security Disability be prepared to wait for a very long time. I applied 6 years ago and am still waiting. I have several doctors that have stated that I am permanently disabled, along with the state doctors the judge sent me to, and she still denied me. …… still in the appeal waiting game.
This is my first post and I don’t think this reply went where I wanted it to, sorry!
P.S. I am really enjoying your blog, especially reading about your health issues.

Pain in the Neck – Oh, it is ok, post wherever you feel like it. What disease do you have that can’t get approved? Oh, that must be awful. I hear it is bad, my friend has a mother who is dying and she just got approved after a year battle. Yikes, I hope I can keep working until retirement. The process sounds too stressful. I’m glad you are enjoying the health stuff, I write it for all the people who suffer and no one understands what they go through.

Panic attacks, agoraphobia (agoraphobia not so much RIGHT NOW, panic attacks, fibromyalgia, ulnar palsy, 3 herniated discs in my lower back, 1 in my neck, ulnar palsy, LOTS of nerve damage, severe depression, the list goes on. They still think there’s something they’re not finding that caused my RAPID weight gain. blah…..
I’ve had a few EMG’s also, fun huh? lol
I’m a Michigan girl too (can you feel that?) I am insanely jealous that you were in a Kid Rock video!

Pain in the neck – I’ve never heard of ulnar palsy, let me go google it. Yikes, doesn’t sound fun. I had a real rapid weight gain, and it was Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. Took four years from diagnosis to treatment. And the synthroid still hasn’t helped that much. Go look it up, see if it fits for you. I’m sorry, I hear you on the herniated disks (I have 7) and the nerve damage. Don’t be jeolous about Kid. He keeps filming them here, just stay in his loop and maybe you can get in one someday. He’s good to us MI people like that. Are you a westsider?
