Quentin Tarantino American Idol Recap

tarantino-quentin

Quentin Tarantino, YOU ROCK!

I mean, how can American Idol get any cooler than tonights episode?  (Well, a Beatles themed Idol with Paul and Ringo would do it for me, but, it ain’t gonna happen.)  Hubby and I are in disagreement about Tarantino and his expertise … I say anyone who can use music so brilliantly in film like he does has the right to to mentor and guide these singers.  Hubby disagrees.  Tarantino uses music like Cameron Crowe uses music in film.  Finally, Idol is listening to this blog and thinking outside the box.  I LOVE THAT Tarantino is there tonight.

I did a quick IMDB search and found out he was in a Golden Girls episode as an Elvis impersonator!  I think I even remember the performance (Gramma and I never missed an episode!)  My god, I wish he and I were real life friends.  I may not have video store experience like he does, but I managed a movie theatre … we got that in common?  I would DIE to write a screenplay half as good as him.  Oh, the dreams I have in this head … anyhoo, check out his career here.  While I love the ultra violence Kill Bill 1 & 2, I think Pulp Fiction is still his masterpeice.  Which film do you think was his best?

  1. Allison -  Don’t Want To Miss A Thing - song by Aerosmith, film Armegeddon.  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120591/  I really like her, and she did a good job.  I can’t believe her voice is so good at such a young age!  She MAY have done better with another song, but compared to everyone else she was one of the better singers.  I actually waited on Aerosmith in 1994 @ Star John R Theatre.  Even got Sten’s autograph even though I wasn’t supposed to, and I called my friends and they came up to stalk him after the movie ended!  Memories … As far as the movie, its a fun flick.  Rent it if you’ve never seen it.  Ben before JLo tainted him.
  2. Anoop - Everything I Do, I Do It For You – song by Bryan Adams, film Robinhood: Prince of Theives.   http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102798/  I love the boos that Anopp got!  Im sorry, I have to say it, Anoop is this years Sanjaya.  He makes all the wrong song choices and doesn’t do fabulous.  Better people than he have already been kicked off this program.  I love Bryan Adams, sang his music for two years straight 1985 and 1986.  Saw him in concert in 1986 … my second concert ever.  Love him, worship him, but after Idol I may never be able to listen to him again.  Robinhood was good, rent it.  Early Kevin Costner always makes my heart skip a beat.
  3. AdamBorn to Be Wild - song by Steppenwolf, film Easyriderhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064276/  Can you say hes the new singer of The Darkness?  Adam doesn’t need Idol, because after tonight, that guy is getting a movie career!  Holy hannah!  Love Easyrider.  Every college kid should rent this film.  Any film lover should rent it.  Steppenwolf is a great bad, don’t underestimate them.
  4. MattHave You Ever Really Loved A Woman - song by Bryan Adams, film Don juan DeMarcohttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112883/  He definatly sang the better version of a Bryan Adams song.  Hell, that song was even nominated for an Academy Award.  But he didn’t rough it up like Quentin told him to, so it was only good for me, not great.  This was not a good movie, but many other women liked it.  I saw it in the theatre.  We snuck in $8 worth of candy.  I remember the candy better than the film …
  5. Danny - Endless Love -song by Lionell Ritchie, film Endless Lovehttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082329/  OK, I love him so anything he sings is going to be great.  Also, I sang this song once @ karaoke, in Puerto Rico, and it was a hit for me and I have no talent compared to my boy Danny.  God, I heart him.  Were there tears in his eyes?  They looked at least glassy.  Oh his poor dead wife.  I love Lionell Ritchie, listen to his greatest hits all the time.  He was the shit in the 80s, me and Ange were constanly singing Hello to one another.  Remember the video?  Never saw the film.  Hmm.
  6. ChrisFalling Slowly - song by Glenn Hansard, film Oncehttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0907657/  Never heard of the singer or the film.  Also wasn’t impressed with it, probably since it was unknown.  People, if they ever have Idol for midwest chubby older ladies, I’m make damn sure I’m picking a popular movie song, like Fame … I’ gonna shake my ass (And my chub rols) and charm my way in.  i’m so sick of this slow boring shit.  Can I please be entertained?  I’m desperate for good tv.
  7. LilThe Rose - song by Bette Midler, film The Rosehttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079826/  OMG, I love Lil, but I’m worried about her … she’s constanly changing her look.  Unrecognizable from week one.  I liked her performance, but secretly I think I sing the song better.  She has a better, stronger, more powerful voice, and she kinda blew it.  Hell, Simon even agreed with me.  As for as Dear Sweet Better Midler, a goddess in the film and in all of her music.  Rent The Rose is you are a die hard.  Rent Beaches if you are a girl who loves movies about friendship.

I hope Anoop goes home tomorrow.  this show was filled with wrong song choices.  Who the hell is advising these people?  Dear lord … please make American Idol contestants pick better songs next week.  I’m getting sick of it.

By the way, so glad Scott got booted last week.  I bet he would have sang a third Bryan Adams song tonight as well.

  1. Haha, that cracks me up that Quentin would go on AI, but whatev, he’s an oddball. A friend of mine was his stand-in on the Grindhouse flicks and said he was extremely nice compared to Robert Rodriguez who was an apparent douche. My favorite Tarantino movie is True Romance, even though he just wrote the script, it’s a great movie!

I agree with what you say about Don Juan…I have a copy of it only because it came free with a Pizza Hut delivery…no joke.

    • I guess he is a big fan, hosted during season 3. (I wantched only 1/2 of season one, then last year and this season so far.) I like True Romance very much, esp. since it was filmed in Detroit.

Hey, they announced that a film studio is opening here in October. 6,000 jobs. How awesome!

  2. Reservoir Dogs is his best….hands down. It was cast well..directed well and there had to be a very limited budget. It was raw and nearly perfect.

    • Jen 512 – I will try. they say they are going with unemployed autoworkers first which bugs me in a way but I understand it.

Electrician – I do love that movie too. Haven’t seen it in a while. I think the whole experience of Pulp Fiction sucker me in. He is just fantastic.

  3. That is awesome! Get in early before they fill it with a bunch of California transplants. (no offense to any Californians out there, but it happened to my city too.)

  4. Huh? How does auto manufacturing translate to film-making? That would bug me too.

    • Jen 512 – I don’t feel sorry for people like my brother who made like $80,00 a year working at Ford, with no degree, no training, and who spent all of his money on crap. He owned 10 cars and a house with lots of land. Now he is a cab driver without a pot to piss in. No money, no cars, no house. And he will get a job before me? WTF? I just filled out my stuff. Wish me luck. Its a damn shame when a woman with a 3.79 gpa can’t get a fucking break in her own state.

  5. I couldn’t figure out if Anoop was getting booed or if his *fans* were saying NOOOOOOOOOP! I’m hoping it was the former.

    • Shannon TX – I think it was boos rather than Noop. Oh oh …

Amy in Ohio – Of course you kept that envelop! I betcha we all did.

  6. You know what is hilarious? I too kept the envelope from Haven ( when she mailed me The Used World)! It is in my hope chest with all of my keepsakes from childhood!!

  7. The thing about Quentin Tarantino is that you either love him or hate him. I love LOVE love him. Pulp Fiction is one of my all-time favorites! And he made an excellent mentor for this week’s AI.

I must have been living on another planet because I’ve not read your recent posts. God you’re a great writer! I wanted to comment about your upcoming doctor appointment, and plan to check out the sites on your most recent post, so I need a little time to read more.

Anyway, with regard to Idol …..

This week I was impressed with Allison. I’m a little worried that she’s been in the bottom 3 more than once. What’s with that? She has the chops and even though I don’t understand her taste in clothes and her hair, she’s an outstanding vocalist!!

I can’t believe I’m saying this but this week’s performance by Adam was a little disappointing. Don’t get me wrong … he’s far and away the best singer this show has seen in YEARS. Maybe I shouldn’t expect amazing perfection each and every week.

And Danny. Oh my oh my. I’m a big fan, but this week he just didn’t bring his A-game. He should have listened to QT. The emotion was there and like Simon, I think we all knew why he picked that song. The ending was better than the beginning, and that’s what most people remember anyway.

I watch Idol with a couple friends each week. We’re crazy fans and talk back to the television as if WE were judging the singers AND the judges. I wish you could join us … we’d have a blast!! We have nicknames for our Top Three
Magenta, Lil’Elvis, and Danny Boy. Pretty obvious.

Which leaves me to Lil. I was so hoping she would come out of the nose dive she’s been on ever since the Motown show. She has such promise. But last night she was sharp, and then flat, and then sharp again. My god it was painful to listen! And her post-performance excuses about getting another chance is getting old.

I agree with you that Anoop is in the hot seat. I also agree that Megan’s departure was way overdue! My nickname for her was The Package … because early in the season the judges said she was cute and the camera loved her and she dressed well and she had a great, distinctive voice. Thank God she’s gone!!!
