WHY LIFE SUCKS WHEN YOUR POOR … I HAVE A DREAM …

Really, nothing truer can be said than if you are born poor, your life just sucks. You just can’t do what you want to. You have no connections. My life has always been hard, even though I’ve managed to thrown in a lot of fun, when you analyze it, my life has sucked, and it still does today. (Not you, hubby, just all the other stuff. And YOU KNOW what I mean!) I have this huge dream, well, more like 10 dreams, but only one I’m focussing on today.

I really want to win an academy award for screenwriting. Seriously.

(Damn you Diablo Cody … winning your Ocsar the first time out, I’m so jealous of you I could puke. But I’m glad for you just the same!)

I have dreamed about what I’d say when I won since I was 10 years old. Who I’d bring. And, my god, the outfit I’d wear, the shoes, the hair, the diamonds! (I love fashion but I’m forced to shop at Kohls …) Check out my damn yearbook. I think it’s mentioned somewhere about how I’m at the reunion wearing a fabulous gown I created myself. But I digress …

As we all know, I love education, and want a PhD. And I want to run a summer camp. And I want to be a writer. And be a college professor, or at least teach at community college. And none of it will probably ever happen. I know it’s not going to happen. So I’ve struggled for years trying to find cheaper education alternatives. My god, it took me 17 years to graduate from college. I’m slowly chipping away at my Masters Degree now… (Feel free to help me by buying Partylite … and thank you Betme who has already placed an order this week, I love you!)

But I really, really, really, really, really, really want to go to Film School this fall. It’s $10,000 and of course we don’t have the money. But my heart wants what it wants … I really want a chance to do this. I know I have it in me to be creative enough to do this … and with the 46 films that are beginning to shoot in Michigan now that our state offers a 40 % tax break, I actually could become a film maker. I just need a lousy $10,000 …. and if I were rich, or had parents who could give me the money, or some kind soul … I could do this. Let’s not forget that I was a telecom major @ MSU who 4.0′d every TC class; that I had to give up an internship to Seasame Street when my grandma died, and I was the girl who was published by age 19 and who wrote the outline to her memoir by the age of 20.

I just need a break … anything … anyone out there wealthy and want to help me out? Oprah, are you listening?

  1. I don’t have 10,000 to give to you, BUT apparantly JOE does…so call him! LOL….YIKES…anyway…I really think you can do ANYTHING you want to do! And you ALWAYS have…You’ve risen above the city you grew up in, the school you went to and the parents you were given! You are SO smart, just really BRIGHT. Witty. I think you are A OK! Chose something and stick to it…and DUH, you KNOW who’s going with you when you get your DAMN AWARD! LOL;)

  2. If I bump into Oprah I am sooo pointing her in your direction. ;)

  3. A – Ha ha ha … I should call up Joe and beg him for the ten grand!!! Thanks for the shout out. Oh, and you get to bring two people to the Academy Awards, so yeah, you are in the clear …

    Peter, thanks a bunch!

  4. Maybe you could get one of those women or minority grants/loans? It’s probably worth looking into because in the big scheme of things $10,000 is not that much and you don’t want to spend the rest of your life wishing you did things differently.

  5. Teeni – I know, but since I’m married, it’s not all up to me … I am trying to talk him into it … and, the school isn’t acredited so I can’t get loans … already tried that … and my student loan payments NOW from my undergrad are @ $420 a month … and I make crap an hour … looking for a new job for almost 2 years now … But thanks for the advice, and , I enjoyed finding your blog today!

  6. You know, you sound like one determined lady! Look into the Michigan Film Comission, see if they have any kind of funding they offer. Also, the government, as well as thousands of private organizations offer writting grants of various sizes and so forth. It can’t hurt and maybe you could get some funding that way.

Also, I have to tell you, I can so relate to the Academy Award speech, the gown and jewels and wanting something like that since childhood – me too. I’m with you. And damn that girl – well not really, well, maybe a little…

    Good luck.
    WC

  7. If I ever win the lottery, I swear right now, I will give you the $10,000. I only buy about one ticket a month so my chances are slim but you never know. I don’t know why some people have so much and some so little. I’d be homeless if it weren’t for my daughter.

  8. Oh Amy wah wah wah.. this is so not like you. If you want it you always go for it! Why do you want to go to film school anyway? If it’s the one in Troy, Nathan went there and I think he said it sucked. And I’m sorry, but poor? You have been EVERYWHERE!

  9. Elaine is cracking me up today…DAMN…she burst your bubble…LOL

  10. I ain’t no Oprah, but I think it’s important and useful to always have dreams…without that you don’t even have a starting point, so even if it looks bleak, anything is possible (feel free to throw up now, hahaha ;-) )

  11. Writer Chick- Thanks writer chic, I’ll look into the grants. Most of the ones I have seen are for families who make under $40,000 … which doesn’t apply to me, but I’ll keep looking ..

Joan- Thanks for thinking of me … but to be honest, I’m sure there are more needy people … but if you win super big maybe I will accept a slice … :>)

Elaine- Girl, cracking me up … Sometimes I just need to whine … Sure, I’m not poor now, but I was for about 35 years … and really, he hated the film school? Can you email him and get the scoop … it is the one in Troy …

The Big A- She did, hee hee hee…

Romi-It IS important to have dreams!!!

  12. Man, the last time I talked to him was outside your place during your spa party. He won’t take my calls, email or call me back! I think he enjoyed the school thing but thought it was mostly a money-grab. I wish I could get in touch with him for more info! Thanks for the comments, “A” – you are so much fun.

  13. Awesome dream! I want to be a screenwriter too, so we’ve got that in common! :-)

Have you written any screenplays yet? That’s always good practice until you can get into your school. :) Not sure if you’ve read it, but Syd Field (I may be misspelling his name) has an awesome book on screenwriting with great tips. I was taught by a guy who was a screenwriter for Home Improvement, and he recommended the book to me. Good stuff.
