Ok, if you haven’t seen Sex and the City yet in theatres, don’t read this blog. Seriously, I don’t want to ruin the movie for you. But I have GOT to talk about it, so read if you must, and don’t blame me for ruining the film for you.
It started out with a great new Fergie song, with a funky spin on the old opening. And it was sweet to see a little recaps of some fun moments from our girl’s sex-filled pasts. And I was happy to be with my old pals, who I never missed a Sunday evening with. Even though I was dirt poor, I always had my girlfriends Ana and Jen over for dinner and we watched SATC on my illegal cable that my landlord provided for me. Sunday nights were fantastic, and it was nice to be reminded of the old days …
BUT, and here is the big BUT, I left the theatre disappointed. I’m sure a lot of girls out there will want to stab my eyes out, but hey, I just didn’t buy the film. I didn’t hate it, or dislike it, I just don’t buy it.
Here is what I loved:
- The fashion, and especially the shoes. Ok, I’ll admit it, I was the girl in high school who really wanted to win “Best Dressed” but didn’t, just because I wasn’t popular enough. From the time I was four I was obsessed with fashion. I loved dressing up for events (I rarely do anymore, but the desire burns in my heart.) And, mother of god, those shoes these girls wear! I may never be able to wear heels again, but dammit, I want a pair of designer shoes before I die.
- The walk-in closet Big bought Carrie instead of an engagement ring. I seriously gasped. My whole life I’ve wanted a walk-in closet, and I had a tear in my eye when I saw that closet. F-in Fabulous ….
- Charlotte reaming out Big in the restaurant for leaving Carrie at the alter.
- Charlotte getting diarrhea in Mexico and pooping her pants in front of the girls. Classic!
What I did not love:
- Big leaving Carrie at the alter. After everything they have been through, that was too much for me. WTF? However, I did love her beating him down with her bouquet when they ran into each other on the street. And the way Charlotte looked at him.
- Samantha staying with Smith for years … and getting a dog … and gaining weight by pigging out to avoid cheating on him. The whole things was stupid. Samantha Jones loves sex, and herself, and is just not girlfriend material. And the whole meltdown on Valentine’s Day when he came home late … not my girl! It’s like “what the hell happened to my favorite character?”
- Charlotte being like a side-kick in this movie. My god, Stanford and Charlotte almost had the same number of lines.
- Stanford kissing the other gay dude on New Years … wait a minute, they hate each other, and know they are friends and/or dating? Nope, don’t buy it.
- Big and Carrie running into each other at their apartment, and then they make up, he proposes on one knee, and they get married simply, alone, at city hall? No f-ing way .. it should have ended with them just moving in together. Carrie is a self-absorbed single girl … and in this movie she was reduced to every typical woman who believes happiness equals getting married. I JUST HATE IT when movies try to give you the happy ending, even though they know reality is better … this is why I love My Best Friends Wedding, because Julia Roberts DOES NOT get the guy!
All this aside, the movie still had some nice moments … and many of you will love it. I however, just did not.

Oh, no, I shouldn’t have read this … well, I hope I will like it. I have been looking forward to this movie for months.

You didn’t spoil it for me because I had no desire to go see it. I don’t really care for SJP – her voice gets on my nerves – and now I may only rent it just for entertainment sake if I have nothing better to do. Seriously. I don’t get what the hoopla is over this movie, or even the series. I think maybe it’s what your graphic says above – just makes me feel inadequate and lonely. It’s so far from reality, at least far from MY reality.
Oh, and I have a walk-in closet. Doesn’t much matter when I don’t have enough clothes to fill even a quarter of it.
I’d better get sewing. LOL.
Oh oh, and I loved David Noth on Law and Order – Criminal Intent. Now, THAT’s a show I’ll pay to see him in. LOL.

Of course, I enjoyed the movie and the overarching theme about love. I believed there was still integrity to the characters and their story.

I was really disappointed by the movie too, especially the ending.

Your review pretty much summed up my feelings. The outfits rocked, but the plot flatlined ——————————

I haven’t seen this movie and don’t plan to unless I spontaneously turn gay, but I have to imagine you had the same feeling every guy over 25 had when they saw the latest Indiana Jones movie. Some nice moments, but wow, some really really stupid ones too. And if you want to see my CARTOONS click on my name link.

Hey, not only guys get excited about the latest Indiana Jones movie … I loved it myself, and blogged about it, too, M Jones!!!

I for one loved it. It was pretty true to the series if you ask me. My only complaint was that Big was so lovey dovey and he was never that soft throughout the whole series. I agree that Charlotte did get a minimal part and I didn’t like that her life was so “perfect” but that was her outlook on life – it’s true to her character. I think they did a great job of keeping it true to form.

I think it depends on if you’re a fan of the tv show. My friends who have never seen an episode of S&TC LOVED the movie. On the other hand, I agree with you. I left the theatre like BLAH… It was way too long. The time in the movie goes by in strange intervals. I thought the fashion week show was terrible for S&TC standards. I totally agree with your #4 about Stanley and Anthony.
Since when do they call Big as John James Preston? He should have been called BIG throughout the WHOLE movie.
I give it a 3/5.

Sad to say I’m going to have to agree with you on this. It wasn’t what I expected it to be. And it also had to much hype, so you thought it was going to be like the series but it wasn’t. Apparently there talking about making a second one.

Hahaha….I LOVED IT, and want to see it again! I can’t believe it was over 2 hours, it flew by…it was like catching up with old friends….and though you’re right about what you say “happy ending wise”, I’m just the kind of girl who obsesses for a happy ending (LOL), which is why I HATED it when Julia Roberts didn’t get the guy!!! I just feel that so often movies get dismissed as not being “realistic” enough, but in my eyes, I don’t go to a movie to be hit with the reality of life, I go to a movie to escape, to enjoy, to see something on screen that I can maybe relate to on some level, but mostly that I can indulge in…like chocolate!

I did tell my friend Ana that perhaps I’ll like it more the second time I see it …

Agreed with your review. I hated Big after he did that to her at the altar.
Really pissed me off. The whole movie was kind of depressing and then…unrealistic. But I guess that’s what movies are for. And it was equally depressing to see how much everyone but Kristen Davis has aged since the show ended.

I really enjoyed the movie. Some of the plotlines might have been a bit farfetched, but to me the girls can do no wrong.
Things I liked about the movie:
-Samantha’s hat trick while observing naked Dante
-Carrie and Miranda ending up in the cab with the same cab driver from the series.
-The way they ended up getting married, as it was the same way I got married and I don’t like big weddings.
-Miranda picking Steve when she ended up with cream on her upper lip.
-Carrie’s hair color change. I didn’t think I would like her as a brunette, but I really did. Her hair is so freaking versatile.
-Samantha putting the smackdown on Big’s rude friend.
-The cameo of Carrie’s skirt from the opening credits.
-Carrie’s assistant making “love” the password.
Things I didn’t like:
-No Aidan.
-Nothing else. Sorry, I just can’t be objective about this topic

Okay, so I was a bit disappointed too, but really got distracted by the damn belt Carrie wore throughout the whole movie! For a girl with enough clothing/accessories to fill a Costco warehouse, she couldn’t ever change the belt?!? I’ve always loved their eclectic fashion, but the bras showing everywhere also drove me nuts!
I agree w/you on Samantha’s part – NO WAY would she have settled down, or passed up the showering hunk:) Must’ve skipped the sex because she looks so old!!

Scamyak – I hear you on that belt! Yuck!

i know this is about a year late, but i definitely left the theatre dissipointed. i have watched the seasons probably about 4 times all of the way through, and seen every episode with commentary at least once, and i feel like i really know that show. the season six part 2 big would have never left carrie at the altar, i mean he flew to paris for her. i know you didn’t like the samantha/smith relationship, but samantha changed for smith. she changed but was still herself, which was shown really well in the series finale. i feel like the series finale of the show was a perfect ending for sex and the city, and opening it back up again was a mistake.
the movie itself was enjoyable, but i became too emotionally invested in the show to appreciate the movie.

Chelsey – Same here. I was just talking about this Sunday, the movie wasn’t true to the characters. I’m not exactly looking forward to the next one, either. I hear you girl!
